Back to Modica the expected international dance competition that this year, in its eleventh year, is evolving transforming from “Sicilian Baroque” in “International Ballet Competition Sicily“, raising even more its international vocation.
The competition started in 2006 under the artistic direction of Maestro Evgeni Stoyanov, she is dedicated to young dancers, aged 11 to 25 years and provides the “classical” sections and “modern” categories divided according to students, juniors, seniors and groups, in addition to special section for young hopefuls.
The competition will be held July 6 to 10 next. Over the course of these five days there will be the performances, the two elimination rounds, the final and closing the gala for the awards. The competition is judged by a jury that follows the participants during all stages and it finally decreed the winners. The jury will be chaired by Tamas Solymosi, director of the Hungarian National Ballet, and will consist of Caroline Iura (from the US) maitre and choreographer Het / Dutch National Ballet, Morihiro Iwata (Japan) Bolshoi principal dancer and director in Ulan Ude, Hikmet Mehmedov (Bulgaria) University Professor of Dance and Fine Arts, Juhyun Jo (Korea) Professor Korean National University of Arts, Max Campagnani (Italy) international choreographer and teacher of contemporary art.
In recent years the competition has had participants from Italy, Japan, Russia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Albania, Slovakia, South Korea, Montenegro, Turkey, China, reaching about 1500 members over the years. In addition to cash prizes the contest also includes the allocated scholarships for each year by the members of the jury that allow young talents to form to the most famous academies in the world.
The competition, whose organization is coordinated by Ornella Cicero, has achieved important goals in recent years thanks to the ten-year collaboration with the City of Modica which benefited from the strong tourism and economic impact that the event has had on the city became a stage prestigious in the dance world. Over the five days in which the event takes place in fact the candidates competing with leaders and parents as a result, stay and live the city, taking the opportunity for a vacation in ibleo, with obvious positive effects for all induced tourism.
In the previous edition of about 400 people who stayed in Modica and Marina di Modica. At the moment the City of Modica has not confirmed its financial support in the competition for this edition 2016 that then, despite the obvious positive effects, is likely to be the last. There is a good will, but in addition to the positive promises of support, naturally await concrete administrative acts in order to ensure both the present and the future of the competition. Yet even now there is an increase in the European area participants, up to 40%, thanks to the opening of the airport of Comiso. It has already confirmed attendance from Cyprus, Portugal, Spain, South Korea, Bulgaria, Japan and Russia.
